There are two main types of ginseng - Asian/Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius). Studies have found that both come with different benefits.

From TCM's perspective, American ginseng is considered less stimulating than the Asian variety. Though the Qi-tonifying action of American ginseng is weaker than Asian ginseng, they are cool in nature; hence, it helps to clear heat, nourishes the "yin", and promotes body fluid generation.

These properties make American ginseng an ideal herb for metropolitans who often work long hours in stressful environments, stay up late, eat an imbalanced diet, smoke, consume excessive alcohol, and lack physical exercise - which then leads to Qi-deficiency.
